Temporal's Valuation Jumps 2.5x in Seven Months, Because AI Agents Keep Falling Over

Selling shovels in a gold rush is old news. Now the company selling "resume where you left off" is worth $12.55 billion.

Three key facts

On September 14, Temporal announced a $550 million Series E at a $12.55 billion valuation. Lightspeed and Wellington Management led, with Goldman Sachs Alternatives' Growth Equity and Tiger Global as co-leads, and a16z, Sequoia, Index and GIC among returning backers. Its Series D in February raised $300 million at $5 billion, so the valuation is up 2.5x in seven months.

Nearly every growth metric has three digits. Annualized revenue run rate is up more than 200% year over year and, per the Business Wire release, has passed $250 million. Paying customers top 4,300, up 139%. In August alone the platform processed 1.9 trillion billable actions, up roughly 350%. Net dollar retention has stayed above 200% since February, and headcount doubled to 570.

OpenAI is the headline endorsement: its usage of Temporal grew 60-fold in under a year. Other customers include Snap, NVIDIA and JPMorgan Chase, with Snap running 414 million Stories a day on it. Temporal sells durable execution, meaning long-running workflows remember exactly where they were after a crash, timeout or network blip and pick up from there. It grew out of Cadence, the open-source project its founders built at Uber.

Every agent demo is the same: one sentence books the flight, writes the code, files the expense report. Nobody demos step 37, when the API times out. Start over? Burn the tokens again? Charge the customer's card twice?

Temporal sells the answer nobody wants to put on stage. OpenAI's 60x usage jump translates to this: the smarter the model and the longer the task chain, the more often it trips mid-run, and the more you need a ledger that remembers where it fell.

Stay sober on the price, though. $12.55 billion against a $250 million run rate is roughly 50x. That multiple bets agents graduate from demos to trillions of production calls. If the bet lands, Temporal is the plumbing of the AI era. If it doesn't, it built a superhighway for robots that quit halfway. The saving grace: 1.9 trillion billable actions in a month is not something you can draw on a slide.
