Amazon Hikes Device Prices Up to 60% Overnight as AI's Memory Grab Hits Your Echo

No event, no announcement, just new price tags overnight. The memory chips that AI data centers are hoarding are now being paid for by the little speaker on your kitchen counter.

The Echo Dot jumps 60%. Around August 21, Amazon raised prices across its Echo, Kindle, Fire TV and eero lines without any public announcement. The base Echo Dot went from $49.99 to $79.99, a 60% increase. Fire TV devices rose as much as 43%, with the Fire TV Stick 4K Max up $25 to $84.99.

Kindles weren't spared. The base Kindle climbed from $109.99 to $149.99, up 36%, and the Kindle Paperwhite from $159.99 to $199.99, up 25%. A three-pack of eero Pro 7 routers went from $699.99 to $799.99. Ring cameras and doorbells and the Echo Studio kept their prices for now.

Amazon blames memory and storage. A spokesperson said the consumer electronics industry faces significant increases in memory and storage component costs, and that Amazon adjusted prices "after absorbing these increases for as long as we could." Weeks earlier, Amazon had raised its 2026 capital spending guidance from $200 billion to $220 billion, citing memory costs among the reasons. Roku, Apple and Microsoft have raised prices on the same grounds.

The dark comedy writes itself. Amazon is spending $220 billion to scoop up memory chips for AI data centers, then telling you the Echo Dot costs $30 more because memory is so expensive. Push the price up with one hand, mail the bill to customers with the other. The Echo Dot was always a loss leader, a cheap on-ramp Amazon happily subsidized so you'd shop by voice. When even the on-ramp starts charging admission, the memory crunch is not a one-quarter blip. We were promised AI would make life cheaper. The first thing it actually delivered was a 60% markup on your alarm-clock speaker.
